WWI Letter Writing Assignment:
Introduction and Rationale
While I did not complete my formal method of analysis for this final artifact, it deserves inclusion and reflection in my larger portfolio. Overall, the student work demonstrates both the accomplishments and continuing challenges of my inquiry research. Attached below is the assignment sheet and the corresponding power point. This assignment was situated within a larger unit on WWI. After students read primary source accounts from both civilians and soldiers they were asked to write a letter from the perspective of a WWI soldier. The task provided a creative space for the students to develop the background and personality of their soldier. I provided the students with a RAFT sheet and instructed them to avoid anachronisms. But ultimately, I allowed students to really focus on whatever aspect of the content interested them. With these looser requirements, I hoped to gauge whether my students would naturally approach the task with an empathetic and imaginative frame of mind.
